The C minor 7 chord contains the three notes of a C minor chord (a triad) and adds a minor 7th at the top of the three existing notes. The formula is 1 b3 5 b7 and the notes are C Eb G Bb.

In general, the harmony of funky or jazz-style blues are often based on minor 7th chords. The minor 7th sounds mellow, jazzy, and somewhat sad.
