C Major 7 Guitar Chord
Alternative Names: C major 7, Cma7, Cmaj7, CM7, Em/C, G6/C
Music Theory
The C Major 7 chord contains the three notes of a basic C Major chord (a triad) plus the 7th interval of the C Major scale. The formula is 1 3 5 7 and the notes are C E G B. Seventh chords are frequently used in jazz songs and have a full, bright, romantic sound.
Notes are often doubled in guitar chords. For example, in this particular C Major 7 diagram, we have 1 3 5 7 3 (C E G B E). As long as the notes in the chord are the same, it is the same chord. Different sequence and different doubling of notes will give different inversion and voicings. Different voicings sound slightly different, even if they are all the same chord.
